fifth element, sci-fi classic

A Sci-Fi Great

Whenever the movie The Fifth Element enters my consciousness, I think of my Uncle Phil and my cousin Brian. The last time I visited them at their Florida home (it has been too long), we watched the movie, and I remember Uncle Phil – and Brian, too, if I remember correctly – telling me it was an absolute favorite of theirs. I suppose the main reason I will never forget this, and that this association is etched in stone, is my surprise at hearing this; I never would have guessed my dear uncle Phil would have even heard of the film, much less listed it among his all-time favorites! At the time, I remembered having seen the movie, but I was basically indifferent to it.

Since then, I have come to greatly appreciate certain science fiction, and I have become a big fan of The Fifth Element: it is one of the best, most unique, imaginative movies in the genre. Bruce Willis (as Korben Dallas) is great, Chris Tucker (playing the very strange but wildly entertaining Ruby Rhod) is hilarious, great actor Gary Oldman (as the evil Zorg) makes the most of one of his stranger roles, Ian Holm (as Father Vito Cornelius, now famous as Bilbo Baggins in LOTR) played his role perfectly, and Milla Jovovich (as Leeloo, the actual fifth element in the film) is incredibly beautiful as always.
